About Biodiesel

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel; produced from domestic, renewable resources like natural oils, waste restaurant grease, algae and other oil sources. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications, is biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

How is it made
Biodiesel is made by blending and heating vegetable oil with methanol and lye, which act as catalysts to break down the long hydrocarbon chain. The catalyst separates the glycerin (heavier part of oil) and leave behind methyl ester, which is commonly referred to as Biodiesel.

Biodiesel blends refer to a fuel that is composed of part pure biodiesel and part petroleum diesel. For example, B100 is pure biodiesel and B20 is a blend of 20% biodiesel and 80% diesel fuel.

Biodiesel Uses
Biodiesel and biodiesel blends can be used in all compression-ignition engines that were designed to be operated on diesel fuel, such as diesel-powered cars, trucks, buses, tractors, boats, shipping equipment, irrigation systems, mining equipment, and electrical generators.

Quality of Biodiesel
Blue Sky Bio-fuels will produce Biodiesel that goes "Beyond ASTM". This recently established standard is legally registered with the Environmental Protection Agency and is a legal motor fuel for sale. Biodiesel that meets or goes beyond the ASTM D751 certification will be a high quality biodiesel and meet fuel specifications.

Where can I buy Biodiesel?
Blue Sky will be producing Biodiesel in the beginning of 2007. We will be providing Biodiesel to local Bay Area Biodiesel and petroleum distributors who have historically relied on imported Biodiesel from as far as Colorado, Minnesota, Arkansas and Florida.
